Dates: February 12 – 17, 2017
Batch: 2014 Script Writing and Direction Students
Resource Person: Sri Azhakappan (Renowned Cinematographer & Filmmaker)
Venue: Studio Floor, KRNNIVSA
A week-long Studio Exercise Workshop on Dramatic Sequences was conducted from February 12 to 17, 2017, for the 2014 batch Script Writing and Direction students at K. R. Narayanan National Institute of Visual Science and Arts. The workshop was led by Sri Azhakappan, a celebrated figure in Indian cinema, known for his work as a cinematographer and filmmaker in both Malayalam and Tamil industries.
The primary objective of the workshop was to train students in the visual and spatial dynamics of directing dramatic scenes within a controlled studio environment. This hands-on training enabled the participants to gain practical exposure to:
Blocking and staging of actors for emotional impact
Lighting design for mood and tone
Camera placement and movement in dramatic storytelling
Understanding mise-en-scène in interior sets
Actor direction and performance modulation
Planning shots for narrative continuity and intensity
Under Sri Azhakappan’s mentorship, students were divided into groups and were assigned dramatic sequences to conceptualize, rehearse, shoot, and present. His guidance helped students understand the finer aspects of creating tension, emotion, and rhythm in scene construction.
Each group’s work was reviewed through daily critiques and group discussions, making the workshop an interactive and reflective learning process. The final day featured a screening of the completed exercises followed by detailed feedback from the mentor and faculty members.
This studio-based workshop played a crucial role in bridging theoretical knowledge and practical skills, offering students a deeper understanding of working with space, light, and performance in dramatic storytelling.
