A ten-day intensive workshop titled “Koodiyattam Basics Lessons: Crafting Presence – Koodiyattam Tools for Cinematic Performance” successfully concluded at the Department of Acting on July 23, 2025. The program, designed for the 2024 admission batch of acting students, aimed to integrate the classical techniques of Koodiyattam with contemporary screen acting pedagogy.
The workshop was led by renowned Koodiyattam artiste and acting pedagogue Shri Sooraj Nambiar, whose experience in both traditional performance and modern training methods enriched the sessions. Across ten days, students were introduced to classical acting grammar with a strong focus on eye work, facial expressions, gesture language, rhythmic awareness, and emotional precision—vital tools for film and theatre performance alike.
The workshop also explored the philosophy and aesthetics of classical performance, emphasizing mind culture, imaginative engagement, and rasa-bhava decoding. Students engaged in both theoretical and practical modules designed to sharpen their expressive range and internal awareness. Exercises also focused on sustaining imagination, atmosphere building, and feeling-oriented performance practice—skills crucial for internalized and subtle screen acting.
Organized by the Department of Acting, the workshop was part of the Institute’s ongoing effort to blend traditional Indian theatre practices with global acting techniques, fostering versatility and cultural depth among its students.
