The Department of Animation and Visual Effects at K. R. Narayanan National Institute of Visual Science and Arts offers specialized programs to prepare the next generation of talented animators and visual effects artists. Understanding that animation is a vital form of cinema, the department focuses on a fresh, innovative approach to teaching and learning.

Led by experienced and skilled faculty, the department provides students with a complete understanding of the animation filmmaking process. The curriculum emphasizes collaboration with other departments, ensuring students gain hands-on experience in every stage of production—from developing ideas to completing a project. Key subjects include Film Appreciation, Story Development, Screenwriting for Animation, Acting for Animation, Traditional 2D Animation, Digital 2D Animation, 3D Animation, and Visual Effects. By combining technical training with creative exploration, the department helps students achieve their full potential, enabling them to succeed in the artistic and technical fields of animation and visual effects.

The objective of the  three year post graduate diploma programme is to help the students in associating the vast world of Animation, VFX and Motion Graphics for film, broadcast and other media streams. In addition to that, the program exposes students to Industry relevant software’s. It aims to nurture the student to gain the potential to become experts in the field of Animation & VFX. The program focuses on carrying out the animation & VFX processes in the media productions where the interaction between animation, acting, music, graphics & aesthetics on one hand and productivity & technology on the other hand.

The wide range of job opportunities are available in this field like: 2D Animation, 2D Layout Artist, Storyboard Artists, 2D Character Designer, line test artist, Clean up artist, 2D concept designer, matte painting artist, 3D character modeler, 3D BG & Props modeler, Texture painting artist, Character setup artist, 3D character animator, Look Development artist, 3D Effects Animator, CG Compositing artist, Animation director, Asset supervisor, 3D pipeline developer, 3D Line producer, 3D Generalist, matchmoving artist, special fx artist, mocap artist, roto artists, etc.
