A Five-Day Art History Workshop for Animation Second-Semester Students

He Department of Animation and Visual Effects recently organized a five-day Art History Workshop for its second-semester students. Held from August 11th to 15th, 2025, the workshop aimed to provide a foundational understanding of global art traditions and their contemporary relevance.

The workshop was led by the esteemed academician, Dr. Kavitha Balakrishnan, who has over 22 years of teaching experience in Art History. A celebrated painter, poet, and art writer, Dr. Balakrishnan holds a Ph.D. in Fine Arts from Mahatma Gandhi University and an MA in Art History and Aesthetics from Maharaja Sayaji Rao University, Baroda. Her expertise and engaging approach made the workshop a significant opportunity for students to experience an integrated approach to art history, theory, and practice.

The workshop, titled "Art History and Visual Communication," was held at the Main CRT from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM daily. Throughout the five days, students were introduced to key developments in the history of art across Europe, India, and Asia, and were encouraged to critically engage with different artistic traditions and movements.

The daily topics covered were as follows:

Day 1: Prehistoric art and its significance.

Day 2: Ancient art, civilization, and culture.

Day 3: Western art movements.

Day 4: Indian art history.

Day 5: Contemporary art and post-humanism.

The workshop helped students understand the principles of visual communication and its relevance to contemporary art and design, and encouraged them to apply theoretical knowledge through practical visual exercises. The program concluded with students being able to identify and describe significant styles in art history, analyze the impact of historical contexts on the visual arts, and critically engage with visual culture
The workshop was a resounding success, equipping students with a deeper understanding of art historical frameworks and enhancing their skills in the discussion, critique, and interpretation of art
